Academia Cotopaxi I.B. Art

This is the work of second year students undertaking the I.B. Visual Art Course at Academia Cotopaxi in Ecuador. The course encourages unique solutions to artistic problems using a range of contemporary methodologies. Each student undertakes self-researched, individual assignments leading to an exhibition and interview at the courses' end.

Paul 2009

During this year my work has been inspired by South American history, especially as to how Latin America has been treated by first world countries. This makes my work political and critical of the countries that have exploited Latin America.

My art could be considered postmodernist, since I use art from other artists specially to create collages. These collages are a fusion of abstract expressionism and pop art. Artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jasper Johns, Jim Dine and Jaime Zapata have influenced my work and ideas. Jaime Zapata has had an special influenced in my work in various ways since he is an Ecuadorian painter who did a series of painting about the same topic, colonization.

During this year I have created a series focused on a few topics, such as art in art, the death of art, colonization, and the slaughter of past civilizations. These topics are closely related to the main idea of the series, which is the exploitation of Latin America.
