Academia Cotopaxi I.B. Art

This is the work of second year students undertaking the I.B. Visual Art Course at Academia Cotopaxi in Ecuador. The course encourages unique solutions to artistic problems using a range of contemporary methodologies. Each student undertakes self-researched, individual assignments leading to an exhibition and interview at the courses' end.

Luisa 2009

Initially I decided to explore ethnic patterns related to my childhood in Ethiopia. The inspiration came from Ethiopian fabric fragments that I had, called “nutella”, which was made out of patterns, especially of rhombuses. It is from this point that I incorporated the rhombuses and triangles in my works. In the process of doing the minimalistic paintings, I noted that what I was doing with the rhombus patterns had a relationship to contemporary minimalist and geometric art.

Further on I tried to bring minimalism from painting into 3 dimensional forms, and from here I explored wall reliefs and sculptures. It is at this point that I tried to create “something elegant using rectangles and triangles”.

The final works of my art collection are based on right angle triangles. All of the sculptures are based on a single triangle that is folded in different angles and directions, forming different types of sculptures. The colors and the lines that go through the sculptures also relate to the previous works, describing the paradox of converting a painting to a 3 dimensional plane.
