This is the work of second year students undertaking the I.B. Visual Art Course at Academia Cotopaxi in Ecuador. The course encourages unique solutions to artistic problems using a range of contemporary methodologies. Maayan 2009

We as humans have the ambition to live up to expectations of what we want to be or what others wish for us to be. Our lives are inspired by aspirations for perfection and the craving to have it all. There are certain people in this world that endure harsh conditions yet choose to hide themselves by creating a new self. Many people choose the simple everyday method, for instance by using cosmetics to hide their character, fashion statements through clothes or by the purchase of materialistic items. These people desire a life they could never have, therefore create the illusion for themselves. These illusions are portrayed in photographs emphasizing individuals living a “perfect” life.
The images from the ‘perfect life’ series are all photographs of everyday events put into a perfect world as everyone wishes it would be, though suspense is added to it by including non-specific ‘weapons’ and horror elements. These signify the choice to ignore certain things in creating ‘the ideal life’. The final sepia series develops combinations of four images, exploring the theme of an unsettled and unsettling world, and are relevant to my own place within it.
