The problems I have faced while working through my pieces has been making the perspective systems exact in order for them to create convincing shapes, and effectively portray depth. It has been a challenge to design new systems in which the perspective is different and explored in a different way, so that the work isn’t repetitive. I learned this in my first pieces at the beginning of the year and have worked to make models accurate by using mathematical progressions to measure the distances between lines.
My work drastically changed with an independent research assignment back in December. It opened my mind to new ways of exploring perspective systems. Esther Stocker and Donald Judd were of great influence in my recent pieces. Their approach is minimalistic and abstract. They are minimalists who do installations and large scale wall paintings in which they explore shapes and how they fit into illusionistic spaces. The idea of doing large scale wall paintings with cubes grew from here.
