Andrea 2008

Through my work I investigate and analyze the relationship between humans and technology, and how as technology evolves, we are slowly becoming obsolete. I investigated this issue because I wanted to address a social issue that was affecting our modern society. Technology dependence, the decay of humanity, and the advancements of technology were several of the topics I researched to get ideas for my sculptures and installations. Most of my work this year has also been influenced by artists like Ilya Kabakov, Edward Keinholz, Alberto Giacommetti, and Greer Twiss.
During these two years I have experimented with using different materials to present this issue. I started using wire when I decided to use materials which were found on machines and technological artifacts. Paradoxically, wire is a common material used to build the figures that represent human dependency on technology. I have worked with different plastics, computer parts, and other mixed media which I have noticed adds meaning to these pieces.
I believe that the strength found in my work is the ability to transmit the idea of human dependency on technology using, ironically, technology. Together, all my pieces address the same issue, and question whether technology will take over our lives, and eventually make us irrelevant.
