Some strengths in my art pieces are the fact that the same message is dealt with in different ways. There are different interpretations that relate to social issues. They relate to abortion, feminism, and to my culture, not as an Ecuadorian, but as part of the youth generation, surrounded by the superficial perceptions of love.
An early problem was how to deal with the heart in a fresh way to attack preconceptions, since it’s a loaded symbol. In addition to this, I faced the fact that my early artworks didn’t question issues, but were more decorative art.
I overcame this by exploring ways in which artists convey messages through their pieces. I used juxtaposition, the placing of things side by side for comparison, in order to compare the heart to different images that would challenge its symbolism.
Artists that influenced me were Jim Dine and Georgia O Keefe. Jim Dine’s artwork includes different images and sculptures of hearts, which is the main focus of my artwork. Georgia O Keefe is a ‘feminist’ artist that made artworks of flowers, portraying them as reproductive organs, in order to challenge the perspective of the image of flowers, (although she denied this!)
I’ve researched my work by investigating the function of the heart organ, and its relationship with our bodies. I also explored the patterns behind the clichéd heart image, and the relationship of love with the brain instead of the heart, which connected to the concept of the math and science in hearts, as well as the chemistry of love.
