Ana 2008

My work mirrors a society in which the roles of females and males have behaved so divergently that harmony between genders is constantly in tension. Through my art I try to portray the inanity of a society whose lack of even-handedness has led to a separation between males and females. A view of how a child observes adults interacting in male-female relationships has been the major thrust of an exploration from an ‘innocent’s’ perspective.
I explored different types of materials but even though I used a series of techniques my “childlike style” stayed consistent throughout all the pieces. I experimented with various materials, from acrylics, to ink, drawing, paintings and even collages.
To express my theme through child-like images was both a strength and difficulty. Managing to communicate a serious social issue in a ‘relaxed’ manner can be perceived as symbolic, but is also threatened by not being taken seriously. Drawing sexual organs which would not be commonly acceptable, can be more positively received when drawn as a cartoon - this being a strength of using child like images.
I researched my work through art exhibition and online. My work has been greatly influenced by street art and outsider artist such as Mickey Walsh, Jim Bloom and Matt Duke Jordan.
