Joanna 2008

I am trying to achieve a challenge to the cliché of the butterfly - I want my audience to be able to understand that there are other meanings to this symbol and see beyond the obvious. The strength that I see in my work is to send a powerful message of 'hope' in a discrete manner. At first glance my art looks decorative, but if one studies it, it becomes obvious that there is a deeper meaning - of a safer world where guns are made of butterflies! I have experimented with different medias, making use of technology as well as mixed media. Three major artists that influenced me are the pop-artists, Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and Roy Lichtenstein. I looked at the work of all three artists and I was able to realize that the message that they are able to portray with the use of such simple images was extremely powerful. These three artists inspired me to create more significant art.
