Lorena 2011

My photographs are a special type of photography, which is called Pinhole Photography. This is when a photograph is taken through a small hole used as the aperture. I used my DSLR camera and made it into a Pinhole camera by making a small hole in the middle of the lens cap. Now, by using the maximum zoom and controlling the properties of the camera depending on the light, a pinhole photograph is taken. Because of the lack of zoom in the photograph, a black background is made around the photograph, making it seem like the viewer is looking through a peep-hole in my photographs.

This leads me to my theme, the peep-hole created by Pinhole Photography adds a more mysterious and strange tone to my photographs. In this way I am trying to show the world in a different perspective than you normally would see it.

Voyeurism is the main theme explored in my photographs. Voyeurism comes form the French word “voyeur” which means the one who looks; voyeurists observe the subject secretly with the use of peep-holes and hidden cameras. My photographs have a sense of secrecy made by the “holes” in each photograph. It makes it look like I am spying on my subject.

Through my Pinhole photographs, I am trying to make the viewer see the world in a different perspective. The viewer sees the world in a more disturbing, mysterious and ambiguous way – as if the viewer were spying himself.

Because of the nature of my photographs taken with a Pinhole, they are characterized by their distortion, their lack of focus and their movement. With these characteristics, I can make and play with a meaning or theme in a series of photographs. I have divided my work into different series to depict different perspectives of the world, for example voyeurism, memory, psychology and nostalgia. Many of my themes are considered a taboo in the modern world society, people do not talk about them, but they know it is something inappropriate or unacceptable in a modern society.

My photographs also include a series in which I did not use a pinhole but tried to keep the unique look that a pinhole photograph has. My result was a strange movement that made the photographs appear abstract and painterly, it seems that I am painting with my camera.

My photographs are also part of a series of movies in which they are ordered in a sequence that portray a specific theme of an unknown journey into the woods and disturbing childish objects.

With my photographs and movies I am trying to reveal these hidden perspectives of the world. I want to show that they exist and that they are part of the world that we live in - even if we have problems accepting it.
