Daniela 2009

Wood, glass, mirror, hammer, saw and nails are just some of the materials used to construct my art. The process of construction of these installations was part of the theme. It is important that the works look rough and rustic, and that they were made with construction materials. As Marshall McLuhan states ‘The medium is the message.’ These materials are stereotypically used only by men. But why is it so hard to believe that a girl could use a saw or build something with tools?
Within these artworks the juxtaposition of opposing objects can be observed. The female and male opposites became a focus in most of the works. But why was it so important to have a female and male element? As my works evolved the female and male elements stopped being a “feminist critique” but rather an acceptance that there is female and male in the world - even though many times it is perhaps stereotypical. We have not yet discovered how to reproduce and survive without one and other. Sexual dependency is an unavoidable bond, as explored in the box-work ‘Opposites’.
The work often embraces elements of science. When observing the art they look like experiments - and they were all created as experiments. The preserving of objects that inevitably decompose is attempted - just as humans insist on trying to freeze time and beauty. Humans have become obsessed with trying to tamper with the course of nature. Science is a way of knowing and a way of understanding - this is why it has become an element of my art, it is a way of understanding human nature. Diagrams, blueprints, maps and experiments become the aesthetic of my images.
