Angela 2009

When beginning my exploration, my main concern was whether I could manage to develop a series of artworks and at the same time transmit a message in an abstract style. My pieces have served as a time machine, trying to encapsulate moments in which theories began to develop.

Although many humans claim to be in a “state of chaos”, of anarchy, through my artwork I have come to realize this is impossible. People constantly try to rebel, creating chaotic situations - yet none of these can really be achieved. Structure will always take over randomness, at least in a small way. I look to provide evidence of how human beings are subconsciously imposing order. Whether admitted or not, it is impossible to achieve chaos.

My artwork often focuses on the techniques utilized during the process. I paint paint, and therefore, I concentrated on paint quality rather than creation of recognizable objects and images. The texture, movement and application of the paint on the canvas plays an important role. Also, by rotating the canvas as I work I create directional paint drips which create ‘order’ within the chaos.

At first sight, each of my paintings appear to be a mesh of paint splattered on with minimal thought: chaos. Yet this “chaos” operates within parameters: the canvas, the paint, the paint brush and the moment to stop.
